The Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly has served demolition notices to 115 houses within the Ramsar site.
According to the Assembly, this was not an easy decision, but a necessary and crucial step in safeguarding the environment.
Ramsar sites are not empty lands but internationally protected wetlands that play a vital role in ecological balance. They act as natural filters for water, provide a habitat for unique wildlife, and serve as protective buffers against flooding. The unauthorized construction of structures within these zones causes irreversible environmental damage and exposes communities to future risks.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Adamu Musah Kalamu, stressed that this action is about prioritizing collective safety, ecological health, and the municipality’s long-term future over individual encroachment.
